British Men Suffering in Silence from Chronic Pelvic Pain

We are delighted that The Pelvic Specialists have been featured in The Times (8th August 2025), in an article highlighting the rising awareness of chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) in men. While pelvic pain is often associated with women, recent reports show it is surprisingly common among men too – yet many continue to suffer in silence.

What is Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome?

Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) refers to persistent pain in the pelvic region that can affect the perineum, lower abdomen, penis, testes, or rectum. For men, it may also cause problems with:

  • Passing urine
  • Ejaculation and sexual function
  • Bowel movements

Research suggests that between 2–9% of men in the UK experience symptoms of chronic pelvic pain, but many do not seek help.

Why Is It Becoming More Common?

Lifestyle factors appear to play a big role in this condition. In the United States, specialists have reported an increase in cases among men working high-stress jobs with long hours spent sitting – such as those on Wall Street. Stress, anxiety and depression can all contribute to increased pelvic muscle tone, which in turn may cause or worsen pain.

The same factors are very relevant here in the UK, where busy work schedules and sedentary lifestyles are increasingly the norm.

Expert Insights from The Pelvic Specialists

In the Times feature, Mr Neil Haldar, Consultant Urologist at The Pelvic Specialists, explained:

“It’s actually surprisingly common in men… The evidence suggests that in up to 80% of cases there is overactivity of the pelvic floor muscles, or a failure to relax those muscles. Stress and lifestyle play a significant role.”

This highlights the need for greater awareness and specialist management of the condition.

Why Men Don’t Seek Help

Despite the prevalence of chronic pelvic pain, men are often reluctant to seek medical advice. Many hope their symptoms will resolve on their own, or feel embarrassed discussing pelvic health. However, early assessment and specialist treatment can make a huge difference to long-term outcomes.
