The appendix is a small finger-like projection of the first part of the large bowel or colon known as the caecum. Several conditions can arise from the appendix, including appendicitis (inflamed appendix) or tumours that can arise from within the appendix.
Removal of the appendix is generally a straightforward operation that is most commonly performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery). We can also perform this as an open operation where laparoscopic surgery is not possible. We usually offer this as a day case operation.
