Pelvic pain is felt below the belly button and between the hips. It may be a sudden, severe pain(acute pelvic pain) or a more moderate pain but last for more than six months (chronic pelvic pain). It can affect both men and women.
Common causes of acute pelvic pain include:
- Acute pelvic inflammatory disease
- Appendicitis
- Peritonitis
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Constipation
- Urinary tract infection
- Pelvic abscess
- Endometriosis in women
- Acute prostatitis in men
Common causes of chronic pelvic pain include:
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Diverticular disease
- Irritable bowel disease
- Abdominal hernia
- Post-operative adhesions
- Musculoskeletal including nerve entrapment, sacroiliac joint or sacrococcygeal pain.
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
- Interstitial Cystitis
- Urethritis
- Pelvic congestion syndrome
- Ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fibroids, vulvodynia or womb prolapse in women
- Chronic prostatitis, chronic epididymo-orchitis, varicocele and epididymal cysts in men.
With such an array of potential causes of pelvic pain, reaching the correcting diagnosis and treatment can often be complex. We believe that a multi-disciplinary approach, involving experienced clinicians from different specialities, is the correct one to achieve effective, long term results.
